  • Looks closer to production
  • Powered by a 948cc, parallel-twin motor
  • Gets WP brake callipers

KTM is planning to expand its big-bike portfolio, as the upcoming 990 SMT has been spotted testing in Europe. The test mule looks much closer to production, hinting that an official unveil could be just around the corner.

The latest spy shots reveal that the motorcycle sports a semi-fairing with a centrally mounted projector LED headlamp, flanked by KTM’s signature LED DRLs. One of the biggest highlights on this test mule is the presence of a front-mounted radar unit. This suggests that the KTM 990 SMT could come equipped with advanced rider aids such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning.

The bike rides on 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends, wrapped in road-biased tyres. Another highlight is that the bike gets in-house developed WP brake callipers for improved stopping performance. Suspension duties are handled by WP USD forks and a rear monoshock.

KTM Engine From Left

Powering the 990 SMT will be KTM’s 947cc, parallel-twin LC8c engine, which also powers the 990 Duke. This motor is likely to make around 120bhp and 103Nm. The engine is expected to be tuned to suit the SMT’s sporty touring character.

KTM is likely to launch the 990 SMT globally later this year. However, it is unlikely to be launched in India.
