India passenger vehicle sales rise 27.3% in May to 438,854 units: SIAM

Sales of cars, sports utility vehicles, motorcycles and scooters in the local market surged in strong double-digits, year-on-year, last month as consumer demand continued in the local market despite global uncertainties due to the West Asia crisis.

As per data available with industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), while sales of passenger vehicles rose 27% to 438,854 units in May, those of two-wheelers and three-wheelers went up by 31% and 14.8%, respectively.

Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM said, “Passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers recorded highest ever sales of May in 2026, with high double-digit growth in each segment. Lower base effect of previous May and demand created due to reduced GST rates, with easier financing, is again getting reflected in higher off-take this month.”

In the two-wheeler segment, sales of scooters grew by 27% to 739,667 units in the month under consideration. Those of motorcycles went up by 7% to 1,113,973 units, on a higher base.
