BMW Unveils X3 Long Wheelbase For China

BMW has introduced the long wheelbase (LWB) variant of its popular X3 SUV, initially targeting the Chinese market. This extended version joins the X1 and X5 in BMW’s growing LWB SUV portfolio for China. The X3 LWB showcases a distinctive design with an illuminated kidney grille and a choice of six exterior paint finishes, including a premium Frozen option. Inside, the vehicle features the BMW Curved Display, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and the innovative BMW Interaction Bar.

Designed to prioritize rear passenger comfort, the X3 LWB boasts a 110mm longer wheelbase compared to its standard counterpart, stretching to a total length of 4,865mm. Higher-end models will feature the M Sport package for a sportier aesthetic. The extended wheelbase provides ample interior space, while the vehicle’s sleek silhouette maintains the iconic BMW X aesthetic. The model incorporates a range of features tailored for the Chinese market, including the advanced BMW iDrive system based on BMW Operating System 9, offering access to a suite of exclusive digital services.

Powertrain options for the X3 LWB include two configurations of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 190hp and 258hp respectively. Both variants are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s all-wheel-drive system. Production of the X3 LWB will take place at BMW’s Shenyang facility in collaboration with Brilliance Automotive.

While the standard wheelbase X3 equipped with the M50 xDrive powertrain will continue to be imported from the United States for the Chinese market, BMW has expressed interest in expanding its LWB SUV lineup beyond China. The company has acknowledged the potential for LWB models in India, where SUVs constitute over 50% of sales. BMW’s senior vice president for Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Jean-Philippe Parain, has indicated that the company is exploring options to introduce LWB SUVs in India, recognizing the importance of ample interior space for the Indian consumer.
