TIRUPATI: Chittoor district police launched an extensive operation to capture a gang of armed thieves who broke into a residential house in the Gandhi Road commercial area of Chittoor in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to sources, around six armed thieves entered the house on Gandhi Road between 2.30 am and 3.00 am.
After being alerted by the house owner, the district police, led by SP VN Manikanta Chandol, launched an unprecedented operation to apprehend the six armed thieves at around 4:00 am.
As a precautionary measure, the entire Gandhi Road area was sealed off by the police, who later managed to enter the residential house through the open backyard.
Amidst chaotic scenes, around four miscreants were nabbed by the police by 8:00 am on Wednesday, while two more thieves were reportedly holed up inside the house.
Two country-made weapons and ammunition were seized from the possession of the four accused caught by the police.
Police brought smoke bombs to the house to choke the remaining two thieves and flush them out.
Meanwhile, police spotted a suspected vehicle with a press sticker, and it is believed that the armed thieves arrived in Chittoor using the same vehicle.
While the operation to capture all the armed thieves is ongoing, police suspect that the gang may have entered the residential house as part of a planned heist at a bank located adjacent to the house.
