Cops to file traffic violation cases online from Monday

Pune: From Monday, all traffic violation cases registered by the police in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune Rural will be filed online through a dedicated window on the district court’s website.
Regional transport offices (RTOs) in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, along with the state highway safety patrol (HSP) covering Pune-Mumbai expressway and all highways in the district, will also file traffic violation cases online.
Amrit Birajdar, presiding magistrate of the motor vehicles court in Shivajinagar, told TOI it will save time from physically reaching the courts to submit documents.
“Also, once filed, an auto alert will go to the offender to pay the fine within a stipulated period. The case will be presented to the court if the offender fails to pay the fine, and thereafter the offender will have to appear in person before the court and pay the fine as per the court’s order,” Birajdar added.

The motor vehicles court, set up under Motor Vehicles Act, 1939, is the only one in the district spread across 15,643 sqkm where six law enforcement agencies like the police, RTO, and HSP file traffic violation cases.
Birajdar said statistics from 2025 show that nearly 1.30 lakh traffic violation cases are pending before the MV court, and despite initiatives like settling thousands of cases in the Lok Adalats/Lok Nyalayas, the pendency has remained the same. This is because the law enforcement agencies intensified their action against violators in the district.
He said law enforcement agencies have less manpower, but the flow of filing traffic violation cases is voluminous. In a bid to expedite the filing of cases and provide speedy justice to litigants, they held several meetings with the principal district and sessions judge Mahendra Mahajan and senior officials and launched the online system to file traffic violation cases.
The judiciary has organised training programmes for law enforcement agencies on how to handle the online process. “Lawyers can now file vakaltnama, phursis (intimation to court), and seek adjournment online,” he added.
Pune police’s additional commissioner of police (East) Manoj Patil said the traffic police generate 1.10 lakh e-challans against violators every month, and most cases are physically filed in the court for nonpayment of fines.
“The online system launched by the judiciary aims to make good use of modern technology, minimise human repetitive work, and bring efficiency and credibility to the system,” he added.
Patil said there are certain categories of offences under the Motor Vehicles Act, like drunken driving, rash driving, high-speed driving, wrong-side driving, and commercial vehicles driving without permits, where an offender will have to pay a fine in court.
Pimpri Chinchwad police’s deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Bapu Bangar said the online system is user-friendly and will save time for policemen who make the rounds of the court.
“Enforcement action will now be intensified, traffic discipline will reflect on roads, and the disposal rate of pending cases will increase in the days to come,” the officer added.
