Delhi Government Extends Existing EV Policy By Three Months Amidst Anticipation For EV Policy 2.0

The Government of has formally sanctioned a three-month extension to its existing (EV) Policy, as confirmed on Tuesday. This decision, made during a cabinet meeting presided over by the Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, ensures the continuity of the current policy framework until the implementation of the forthcoming 2.0. The Transport Minister, Pankaj Singh, clarified that this extension does not entail any prohibition on auto-rickshaws or any other vehicular categories, emphasizing the government’s commitment to incorporating comprehensive provisions for the citizenry within the revised EV policy.

This extension marks a subsequent continuation of the initial Delhi EV Policy, which was inaugurated in August 2020 with the primary objective of mitigating vehicular emissions and achieving a 25% adoption rate for electric vehicles by the year 2024. Following the expiry of its initial three-year tenure in August 2024, the policy has been subject to prior extensions.

Currently, the government is in the process of formulating the Delhi EV Policy 2.0, which is strategically designed to further incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles as a measure to combat pollution. The draft of this revised policy encompasses a broad spectrum of vehicular segments, including two-wheelers, buses, three-wheelers, and goods carriers, with the overarching goal of facilitating their transition to electric propulsion. The proposed framework also delineates various incentives aimed at stimulating EV adoption, such as potential subsidies for female purchasers of electric two-wheelers and purchase incentives based on kilowatt-hour capacity.

Furthermore, the Delhi EV Policy 2.0 anticipates the creation of up to 20,000 employment opportunities during its operational phase and aims to establish essential infrastructure, including battery collection centres and a comprehensive network of charging and battery-swapping stations across the city. Upon receiving Cabinet endorsement, the policy will be officially notified, signifying a concerted effort to enhance Delhi’s air quality through the accelerated replacement of conventional fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
