Dodge Recalls Its Most Powerful EV. The Reason? It Isn’t Loud Enough!

In a twist only Dodge could deliver, the American muscle car icon is recalling its most powerful electric car, the Charger Daytona EV, because it might not be making enough noise. Yes, you read that right.

Known for building some of the loudest, tire-shredding machines on the road, Dodge didn’t want its first electric muscle car to creep around in silence. So, they gave it what they call the Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust, a system of external speakers that pumps out a fake exhaust note, mimicking the roar of a classic V8.

However, it turns out about 8,390 units of the Charger Daytona EV in the U.S. might not be meeting the minimum ‘loudness’ levels required by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS). The issue? Incomplete software in the amplifiers for the exterior sound system.

Unlike the Fratzonic exhaust, this sound system isn’t just for drama; it’s also meant to warn pedestrians of an approaching EV, a requirement for all electric cars to help make up for their near-silent motors. If the speakers fail, people might not hear the 670 hp, 850 Nm electric Charger sneaking up behind them.

The recall affects select units of the Charger Daytona EVs built for model years 2024 and 2025. Dodge will update the faulty software at no cost to owners.

The Charger Daytona is Dodge’s first all-electric car, and its first Charger with all-wheel drive, thanks to its dual-motor setup. With a combined 670 hp on tap, it can rocket from 0–98 km/h (0–60 mph) in just 3.5 seconds, fast enough to make you miss the V8 almost a little less.
