The Gautam Budh Traffic Police of Greater Noida issued a fine of Rs. 1,000 to a woman for driving her car without wearing a helmet. The woman stated that she wasn’t driving in the said location on that day.
The woman said, “On the evening of July 7, while I was occupied with household chores, I received a message from the Traffic Police on my mobile phone. Initially, I thought that a relative who had visited my home might have violated traffic rules while driving my car.”
“However, when I opened the message, I was shocked to see a photo of a bike attached to the challan and my car’s registration number mentioned for driving without a helmet at 8.29 am on June 27,” she added.
The woman went on to say that she doesn’t own any two-wheeler and the only vehicle registered under her name is a Hyundai i20. She also said that the police has made an error and should discard the fine.
The female, to clear the dues on the fine, would have to travel over 35km to the traffic control room and was against doing so. Also, she said that legal action would be taken against her if she doesn’t show up.
Speaking about the matter, she said, “The challan instructs me to visit the traffic control room office in Noida Sector 14A before the due date, or legal action will be taken against me. The distance between my home and Sector 14A is approximately 35 km.”
Preeti Yadav, the Deputy Comissioner of Police, said that the ITMS (Integrated Traffic Management System) captures the vehicles registration number but may read the digits wrong at times which may be the cause for this problem.
Preeti Yadav went on to say, “If the vehicle owner approaches the traffic police, they cancel the challan if it is determined to be incorrect. Complainants can directly approach our office or contact us via email.”
The Police force is greatly dependent on the new arrival of the traffic cameras to help catch the rule-breakers on the road. However, not always are these cameras accurate as they can misread the digits and letters on the number plate and issue a fine to an innocent road-goer.
