Gas shortage hits crematoriums in Vijayawada, families turn to costly firewood

Vijayawada: The ongoing LPG shortage, linked to global disruptions from the Iran conflict, has now begun to affect funeral services in the city. Several LPG-based crematoriums are struggling to function, leaving grieving families with limited options. The well-known Swargapuri Crematorium at Krishna Lanka, considered one of the most affordable facilities, has scaled down operations. Normally, cremations here cost around ₹3,000 using LPG systems, with a free vehicle service to transport the body. But with commercial cylinders unavailable, services have been disrupted.Y Venkateswara Rao, manager of the Swargapuri Development Committee, said one commercial cylinder is essential for each cremation.

“Without a regular supply, it is impossible for us to continue smoothly. We are urging the district collector to allocate cylinders specifically for crematoriums,” he explained. With LPG facilities hit, families are being forced to turn to traditional firewood-based cremation. While functional, this method significantly increases both cost and time. Residents said expenses have more than doubled. “Earlier, cremation at the LPG facility cost around ₹3,000.

Now we are forced to spend nearly ₹7,000 using firewood. In such painful moments, it becomes a heavy burden,” said M Nageshwara Rao, a local resident.Meanwhile, residents of Krishna Lanka raised concerns about pollution. “Traditional cremation releases a lot of smoke. Authorities should ensure gas crematoriums function without interruption to minimise air pollution,” said Sobhan Raju.Consumer groups have urged officials to prioritise LPG supply for crematoriums as the city struggles with the deepening gas crisis.
