Gurgaon woman drives cab as driver falls ill midway

GURGAON: A make-up artist traveling with her daughter, mother and grandmother last week took the wheel after the driver of her cab fell ill and dizzy while they were travelling from the city to Ghaziabad.
Honey Pipal (39) said on Wednesday that the incident occurred on March 18 when she and her family were visiting some relatives in Gurgaon’s Sector 130.
They hailed a cab from a ride-aggregator app and while boarding, Pipal said, she saw the driver taking some pills.
“I asked him the reason and he said he was not feeling too well. I asked him if I could drive on his behalf as I was carrying my driving licence. But he refused, saying it would be an issue because this was a commercial vehicle,” Pipal said.

The ride ran into traffic on the Dwarka Expressway, and the driver told the family he was feeling dizzy and needed to stop.
“We asked him to have some lemonade and stopped on the expressway for 20 minutes. After that, he asked me to drive, so I took charge,” Pipal said.
The family reached around 8pm, almost four hours after they started.
A week later, Pipal shared a clip of the incident on her social media account, sparking an online discussion on the uncertainties of daily travel and the necessity to act kindly in such situations.
“I thought of sharing this experience and made a small video, which I also generally do for my social media handle, being a makeup artist,” Pipal said.
The 39-year-old said she has been driving since 2009 and believes it’s a skill necessary for self-reliance, regardless of one’s gender.
