Heightened security at Chandigarh airport after Army foils missile attack

Mohali: Security at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport witnessed a significant escalation on Thursday after the Indian Army reportedly thwarted a planned missile attack targeting 15 key defence installations across the country, including Chandigarh.The international airport was shut for civilian operations on Wednesday.In response to the potential threat, Mohali Police ramped up security measures in and around the airport premises. Patrolling by PCR vehicles was intensified along the boundary wall of the airport, while a special police barricade was erected approximately 100 metres before the main entry point. All approaching vehicles were being stopped and thoroughly checked as part of precautionary security protocols.On the second consecutive day, the airport remained largely non-operational, with all commercial flights grounded and the terminal wearing a deserted look. Officials at Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL) confirmed that only airline staff and essential support personnel were being allowed entry.”We have intensified patrolling in and around the periphery of the airport,” said Mohali SSP Deepak Pareek, adding that security teams were under strict instructions to maintain heightened vigilance.The security clampdown follows Wednesday’s move by the Indian Air Force (IAF), which took complete control ofChandigarh airport operations.

This prompted the suspension of all commercial flight services until further notice. A total of 52 flights, including two international routes, were cancelled following central government directives aimed at safeguarding sensitive airspace.Sources within the Mohali police revealed that four to five PCR units have been assigned to conduct continuous surveillance along the airport’s perimeter and to intercept any suspicious individuals or activities.

The presence of heavily armed personnel and strict security checks created a visibly tense atmosphere near the facility.Despite public announcements, a few confused passengers were seen approaching the airport. Police personnel on site were seen redirecting them and providing clarity on the suspension of operations.
