How Much Does a New Charger Cost?

The price of a new EV charger mainly depends on its charging capacity and type, as the most basic option is a Level 1 portable charger, which usually operates at around 3.3 kW. These chargers are slower but relatively affordable, costing approximately Rs 15,000 to Rs 30,000.

A more common option for home charging is the AC wallbox charger, typically rated between 7.2 kW and 11 kW. These are faster and more convenient for regular EV users. Such chargers usually cost between Rs 35,000 and Rs 1 lakh, depending on the brand and features.

For homes with a three-phase electricity connection, faster chargers with up to 22 kW capacity are also available. These high-powered units can cost anywhere between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh.

The cost of replacing a charger is not always limited to the device itself. Installation charges can add another approximately Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000, depending on wiring length, mounting work and electrical setup.

In some cases, homeowners may need to increase the electrical load from their local power distribution company (DISCOM) if they upgrade to a higher-capacity charger and this upgrade can cost another Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000.

A home EV charger is one of the most important accessories for electric car owners, while failures are not very common, replacement costs can vary widely from Rs 15,000 for a basic portable charger to over Rs 1.5 lakh for a high-powered wallbox unit. EV owners should regularly check wiring, avoid voltage fluctuations with proper earthing and ensure the charger remains protected from weather exposure.

As India’s EV ecosystem grows, home charging will continue to play a central role in everyday electric mobility, and while replacing a charger may not be cheap, it is still a small price compared to the long-term savings EV owners enjoy on fuel and maintenance.
