Gurgaon: The enforcement team of GMDA launched an anti-encroachment drive near Sikanderpur on MG Road on Tuesday, demolishing unauthorised structures and towing illegally parked vehicles. Illegal shops in furniture market, building material shops and parking lots were removed.
The crackdown came after repeated complaints about traffic congestion and road safety concerns in the area, which were exacerbated by illegal occupation of govt land beneath metro pillars, officials said.
Led by DTP RS Batth, the GMDA enforcement squad targeted businesses that had illegally occupied public land despite prior notices. Three shops dealing in building materials were demolished, and stock obstructing the area was removed.
“We gave repeated warnings to remove encroachments, yet they persisted. We are committed to a zero-tolerance policy against illegal occupation of public land,” Batth said.
The drive also aimed at easing traffic situation in Sikanderpur. Residents had raised concerns about unauthorised commercial vehicles frequently entering and exiting MG Road, disrupting traffic flow. In response, GMDA, with the help of the mobility towing unit, removed nearly 20 vehicles loaded with materials and towed five illegally parked trucks from under the metro line.
According to GMDA officials, this was not the first action in Sikanderpur. “We visited the location twice before and instructed people to vacate, but some continued their illegal occupation by setting up businesses and even renting out spaces. Now, strict action has been taken,” an official said.
Apart from demolition and towing, officials engaged with local shopkeepers, urging them to refrain from encroaching on public spaces. “Encroachment leads to severe traffic congestion. We are taking firm action while also educating people on the importance of keeping public spaces clear,” Batth added.
Residents expressed support for the action but called for regular monitoring. “Traffic is a mess here, especially during peak hours. Such drives should happen more frequently. Otherwise, the encroachments return within weeks,” said Pratibha Saxena, a resident of DLF 2.
