Kia Slashes 8 Variants Of Carens MPV To Push Carens Clavis Sales In India

announced the launch of the new MPV in the country earlier this month. The new car comes based on the existing but with enhanced features list and exterior design details. Now the news is that soon after the Clavis’ launch, has discontinued all major variants of save for Premium(O) trim. The same model is listed at Rs 11.41 Lakh (ex-showroom) and is devoid of some key features such as the ventilated seats, sunroof, Level-2 ADAS and more. So why has Kia done this?

Kia wants to push the sales for the new Carens Clavis MPV and given that it gets all the bells and whistles which the base (Carens) misses out on, interested customers would be forced to book the fully kitted version.

Before the latest revision, the Kia Carens was offered in nine distinct variants: Premium, Premium (O), Gravity, Prestige, Prestige (O), Prestige Plus, Prestige Plus (O), Luxury Plus, and X-Line. Kia has now streamlined the line-up by discontinuing eight of these trims, retaining only the Premium (O) variant—positioned just above the base model.

The Premium (O) variant omits several features previously available in higher trims. These include ventilated front seats, automatic climate control, alloy wheels, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), leatherette upholstery, ambient lighting, push-button start/stop, cruise control, an electric sunroof, and the 6-seat configuration.

Manual-Only Powertrain Line-Up

While the Carens Premium (O) continues to be offered with all three powertrain options—a 115 hp, 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine; a 116 hp, 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine; and a 160 hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine—none of them are paired with automatic transmission.

The naturally aspirated petrol and diesel engines are available solely with a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the turbo-petrol engine is offered only with a 6-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT). Consequently, the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission options have been removed from the Carens line-up altogether.
