Lack of vehicle-wise markings defeats on-street parking plan

Nagpur: The absence of vehicle-wise markings in Nagpur Municipal Corporation(NMC) ‘s on-street parking project rendered the initiative ineffective, defeating its very purpose, flagged DCP (traffic) Archit Chandak at a review of the project on ground zero on Monday morning.Although the approved plan specified designated spaces for two-wheelers and four-wheelers, on-ground implementation showed only a single line painted along roads, causing confusion and traffic chaos.”Boards are put up, but without proper demarcation for vehicle types the parking system is meaningless,” said Chandak. He pointed out that such half-hearted execution not only leaves motorists confused but fails to solve growing congestion problem.Municipal commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, who accompanied the DCP during the inspection, expressed strong disapproval of the lapses. “We are spending public money on this project. If it doesn’t serve its purpose, the entire effort is a waste,” he remarked, directing NMC’s traffic department to ensure immediate correction as per the approved design. To ensure discipline, the commissioner instructed DCP Chandak to initiate strict towing of vehicles parked outside marked zones. Chandak assured that haphazardly parked vehicles will be removed promptly.Officials from the traffic department blamed ongoing infrastructure projects — including flyovers, road underbridges, and cement concrete road works — for the delay in painting proper parking lines. But Chaudhari dismissed the excuse and issued a 15-day ultimatum to complete the work across all identified parking zones. The city continues to reel under congestion caused by unregulated roadside parking, especially in areas lacking adequate space in commercial and residential buildings. With top officials now cracking down on poor implementation, the success of the on-street parking plan will depend on urgent corrective action and sustained enforcement.
