Lamborghini Backs Synthetic Fuel To Keep Combustion Engines Alive

Lamborghini believes the future of internal combustion engines isn’t over yet, thanks to synthetic fuel. According to a report by CarExpert, the Italian supercar maker is doubling down on e-fuels as a way to preserve the sound and soul of its legendary performance machines, even as the industry leans toward electrification.

Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini’s Chief Technical Officer, told CarExpert that their upcoming twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 has been engineered to run efficiently on both traditional petrol and synthetic fuel. He stressed that this new-generation engine offers the same exhilarating performance with either fuel type, with zero compromises. Mohr added that electric vehicles, while impressive, still can’t deliver the same emotional connection as a roaring combustion engine.

With the European Union aiming to ban new vehicles that emit CO₂ by 2035, Lamborghini views synthetic fuel as a potential regulatory workaround, particularly if it can be produced in a carbon-neutral manner. That could allow combustion engines to remain legal and relevant, even in a low-emission future.

Other luxury automakers, including Porsche, Ferrari, and Bentley, are also investing in synthetic fuel development. Porsche has already begun producing e-fuel in Chile, converting hydrogen and captured CO₂ into a usable gasoline alternative. While mass adoption may still be years away, Lamborghini is betting that its customers will embrace synthetic fuels, despite their higher cost, to keep the visceral joy of combustion alive. For now, it’s a niche, but one the brand believes is worth protecting.
