Lamborghini Isn’t Rushing Into EVs: Here’s Why They’re Holding Back

While the rest of the auto industry speeds toward an electric future, Lamborghini is pumping the brakes, at least for now. The Italian supercar brand has officially delayed the launch of its first electric model, the Lanzador, until 2029. And from the sound of it, they’re in no hurry to ditch internal combustion engines.

Speaking recently to CarExpert, Lamborghini’s Chief Technical Officer, Rouven Mohr, made it clear: the company still sees a future in petrol power. “We still think that we have a lot of ideas to transport, let me say, the combustion future,” he said. That’s corporate-speak for: we’re not done with loud, fire-breathing engines just yet.

Even as Lamborghini dabbles in hybrid tech, the Urus SUV and Temerario already feature electrified powertrains, the brand insists full electrification isn’t on the immediate horizon. According to Mohr, the emotional experience of driving a Lamborghini is something that electric motors just can’t deliver right now.

This decision doesn’t seem to be hurting business. Lamborghini had a record-breaking year in 2024, selling 10,687 cars, a 5.7% bump from the year before. The Urus led the charge, followed by the Huracan and Revuelto. Clearly, buyers are still lining up for what Lamborghini is selling.

But the clock is ticking. The European Union is considering a 2035 ban on new petrol vehicles, which could eventually force Lamborghini’s hand. And while the company aims for carbon neutrality by 2050, it’s banking on synthetic fuels to keep its engines alive —a technology that’s still very much in development.

So what’s next? Lamborghini is walking a fine line: keeping its identity rooted in raw, visceral performance while slowly adapting to a changing world. For now, that means more hybrids, more V8s, and more time to figure out how to make an electric car that feels like a true Lamborghini. Whether that balance holds as regulations tighten is the big question, but one the company isn’t ready to answer just yet.
