Mangaluru Police Make Child Safety Harnesses Mandatory On Two-Wheelers

In a significant step to boost road safety, the Mangaluru City Police have made it compulsory for children under the age of four to be secured with a safety harness while riding on two-wheelers. This new rule, which aligns with a Supreme Court directive, aims to better protect young passengers across the city.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime & Traffic) K Ravi Shankar emphasised that carrying children without a safety harness is a clear violation of the Motor Vehicles Act. He also reminded the public that both the rider and the child must wear ISI-certified helmets.

To improve enforcement without causing traffic bottlenecks, the city will now use artificial intelligence-powered cameras to monitor compliance. Instead of stopping vehicles manually, these cameras will automatically detect violations and issue fines.

This move comes in response to growing concerns over road safety in Mangaluru. According to City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, 75 people have died in road accidents within city limits so far this year. Alarmingly, 70 of those deaths were linked to reckless or negligent driving, with many involving young individuals under the age of 30.
