Maruti Suzuki Boosts Output, Preps For EV Future

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) is ramping up efforts to make its production facilities more flexible to accommodate a wider range of models, including electric vehicles (EVs), as part of its long-term growth and decarbonisation strategy. India’s largest carmaker plans to expand its total manufacturing capacity by 20 lakh units by 2030-31, aiming to support a lineup of up to 28 models. The new plant in Kharkhoda, Haryana, has begun operations with an initial capacity of 2.5 lakh units, starting with the Brezza compact SUV. This complements its existing plants in Gurugram and Manesar (16 lakh units combined), and ’s 7.5 lakh-unit facility. “We’re making our plants more flexible so more lines can produce multiple models, including EVs,” said Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer (Corporate Affairs), in an analyst call.

Maruti Suzuki’s first EV, the eVitara, is set to launch in September 2025, with initial production primarily aimed at export markets. Bharti noted that EV production lines require adjustments due to battery weight and structural needs, but the company is adapting accordingly. He also acknowledged that EVs offer lower profitability than ICE vehicles and rely heavily on government support such as lower GST and subsidies. “We have to be conscious of that,” he said.
