Should I Buy The Newly Launched Tata Punch EV Or Stick To Nexon EV Base Variant?

New Tata Punch EV vs Nexon EV Spec Comparison

If you are in the market for an affordable electric vehicle that is comfortable for the family and offers decent range, under Rs 13 lakh budget, then you may have shortlisted the Nexon EV Smart base variant for its popularity and tried and tested track record. However, Tata Motors has recently launched the new Punch EV compact SUV with bigger 30 kWh and 40 kWh battery packs, closing the gap between the Nexon and Punch EV models. Hence, prospective buyers are likely to wonder whether it is better to go in for a base variant Nexon EV or a top of the line Punch EV that would cost Rs 20,000 less and offer more comfort and luxury features while being equally efficient. Let’s take a quick look at what you get.

For the Nexon EV, the base Smart variant has an ex-showroom price of Rs 12.49 lakh. For that amount, you get a bare bones electric Nexon that comes with the medium-range 30 kWh battery pack that has a C75 real-world range figure of 210 km to 230 km. In terms of features, it covers the basics such as reflector-based LED headlamps, DRLs, reverse parking camera with sensors a 5-inch touchscreen and driver information display, along with 4-speaker audio and more. Safety features include 6 airbags, ESP and other standard features.

On the other hand, you can bring home the new Punch EV top-end Empowered 40 variant for Rs 12.29 lakh ex-showroom. This gives you access to a significantly larger 40 kWh battery that has a C75 real-world range figure of 335 to 355 Km on a full charge. That’s not all, the new Punch EV also comes with Tata’s new E-Drive electric motor, which is lighter and more efficient than the Nexon EV’s Gen 2 Electric Motor.

Considering the Empowered 40 variant is just one step down from the top-end Empowered Plus S 40 variant, the Punch EV also offers high-end features such as a 360-degree camera, 10.24-inch touchscreen and digital cockpit. It also gets dual tone-roof, push-button start-stop, cruise control, all LED lighting and a lot more.

Where is the compromise?

Between the Nexon EV Smart base variant and the Punch EV Empowered 40 variant, the main differentiator is room inside the cabin and boot space capacity, considering that one is from a larger segment than the other. For perspective, the Punch EV wheelbase is 53 mm shorter and 60mm smaller in width when compared to the Nexon EV. However, it offers better boot space at 366 litres, when compared to the Nexon EV’s 350 litres.

Hence, if a larger battery pack, latest drivetrain technology and high-end features are a priority, then you should compromise a bit on road presence and go in for the new Punch EV. Meanwhile, if you need a bit more room in the second row then the Nexon EV Smart variant will fulfill that requirement.
