After considerable negotiations, it appears that Elon Musk’s Tesla is set to launch in India next week. According to a Reuters report, the American electric vehicle (EV) maker will open its first showroom in the country on July 15. This showroom, referred to as an “experience centre,” will be located in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. Tesla will open its second showroom in Delhi at a later date.

Tesla’s first showroom in India will occupy a 4,000 sq ft space in the BKC business district, which also houses the largest Apple Store in India. Similar to its operations in other countries, Tesla will adopt a direct-to-customer model in India. However, reports suggest that the EV manufacturer may collaborate with local partners for after-sales support.

Regarding the vehicles, initially, all models sold in India will be imported. The Indian government has expressed its interest in having Tesla establish a manufacturing facility in the country, but for now, Musk has opted for the Completely Built Unit (CBU) model. The company plans to benefit from India’s recent reduction in import duties on CBU vehicles.

Tesla is expected to introduce the Model Y and Model 3 in India first. These models are considered the brand’s entry-level electric vehicles. They will likely be manufactured at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Berlin, which produces cars for right-hand-drive markets. In the future, we may also see other models, such as the Model S, Model X, and the Cybertruck, making their way to India.
