Tokyo Man’s Ferrari Burns 1 Hour After Delivery: Here’s Why It Could Have Happened

A 33-year-old music producer in Tokyo recently faced an unimaginable setback just an hour after finally getting behind the wheel of his dream car, a Ferrari 458 Spider. After spending ten long years saving up for the luxury vehicle, Honkon was thrilled to take it for a drive—but his excitement quickly turned to heartbreak.

On April 16, as he was cruising on the Shuto Expressway, he noticed smoke pouring from the engine. Panicking, he pulled over and jumped out, but within just 20 minutes, the car he had longed for was reduced to ashes. Thankfully, Honkon managed to escape without any injuries, and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Feeling devastated, Honkon shared his story on social media, saying, “My Ferrari burned to ashes an hour after delivery. I bet I’m the only one in all of Japan to experience this kind of trouble.” He also expressed his fear during the ordeal, admitting he was “really scared that it would explode.”

Why The Ferrari 458 Italia Could Have Caught Fire

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department. However, this is not the first time that Ferrari’s 458 lineup has been linked to fire hazards. In 2010, Ferrari recalled over 1,200 units of the 458 Italia due to a known issue. The adhesive used to secure the wheel arch heat shields could melt at high temperatures, causing the shields to sag or detach. This exposed the engine bay to extreme heat, resulting in several fires worldwide.

Although the recall primarily affected the 458 Italia coupe, early models of the Spider may have had similar vulnerabilities before design improvements were implemented. If Honkon’s car was a pre-owned model, it is possible that it was never properly updated, which is something investigators are likely to examine.
