China’s BYD Hits 15 Million EV Production Mark, Continues Premium Play In India

BYD Achieves 15 Million Production Milestone – Details

Chinese EV maker BYD has recently achieved the 15 million electric vehicle production milestone. The 15 millionth car to roll off BYD production lines was a Denza N8L SUV, a sub-brand that the automaker operates in Asia, Europe and Latin America. The milestone was achieved at the Jinan Factory in China and also marked the 15,000th Denza N8L to have been produced. However, despite its growing popularity in global markets, BYD has been unable to make a mass market play in the Indian market under its main EV brand and continues to cater to the premium EV segment.

BYD has announced that the brand achieved cumulative sales of 4.182 million units between January to November 2025, which represents 11.3 percent of year-on-year (YoY) growth for the automaker. Overseas sales grew to 917,000, surpassing 2024 figures and BYD currently sells its electric vehicles in 119 countries and six continents. However, in India, BYD recorded just 417 sales under its primary brand in the month of November 2025, according to VAHAN data.

BYD’s Denza N8L Becomes 15 Millionth EV To Roll-Off The Line

This highlights the slow progress that the brand has made in India since it entered the domestic market with its first D2C EV in 2022, called the Atto 3. Since then, the brand has expanded its portfolio with models such as the BYD Seal, eMAX 7 MPV and the Sealion SUV. While BYD has seen consistent demand, its market remains limited to the premium EV buyers in the country, with the product range starting from Rs 24.99 lakh ex-showroom.

Apart from its premium positioning, protective government policies and a growing fleet of domestically produced and capable EV models have also led to limited interest and awareness in BYD electric cars in the country. Meanwhile, BYD does plan to set up a manufacturing facility in Hyderabad with an investment of Rs 85,000 crore. Once built, the facility will reportedly have a battery production unit and an annual production capacity of 6 lakh EVs. More importantly, increasing localisation would help BYD price their products more competitively and tap into the mass market.
