Royal Enfield’s mid-size motorcycle story in India has entered an interesting new phase as after the disruption caused by the recent GST rate revision on bigger bikes, the brand is now seeing demand slowly return and surprisingly, it is the 650cc motorcycles that are bouncing back faster than the newer 450cc range.

This may sound like just another sales update, but actually, it tells you how Indian buyers are thinking, spending and upgrading in the premium motorcycle space.

According to B. Govindarajan, Managing Director of Eicher Motors and CEO of Royal Enfield, this is exactly what happened. Volumes fell after the GST revision, but the good news is that customer interest is now returning. The recovery, however, is not equal across the range.

This is significant because the 650cc bikes sit higher in the price bracket. A faster recovery here shows that premium motorcycle buyers are still willing to spend as they were only waiting for the market to stabilise. The 450cc segment is also improving, but at a slower pace.
