Honda India Expansion Plan Suggest a Bigger 125cc and EV Push

  • Demand shifting from 100cc towards 125cc and 160cc classes
  • Plans to raise annual motorcycle production capacity in India by 2028
  • India launches will stay flexible and demand-led

Honda’s latest set of announcements places India at the centre of the company’s next growth phase. India is the largest market for Honda’s motorcycle business with annual sales of around 5.8 million units and a market share of roughly 28 percent as of the end of the financial year ended 31 March 2026. India is no longer just one more volume base for the brand, but the core of Honda’s global motorcycle play.

The company said customer preference in India is moving away from the currently dominant 100cc class towards 125cc and even 160cc motorcycles. Buyers still care deeply about efficiency and affordability, but they are also asking for a little more performance, a little more equipment and a little more aspirational value. Honda is clearly preparing itself for that shift rather than treating India as a fixed commuter-only market.

Honda has plans to expand its annual motorcycle production capacity in India by 2028. The current 6.25 million units will be raised to around 8 million units as demand is expected to stay strong.

India will also continue to grow as an export hub. The company says its production operations here will advance further as a base for global exports, especially to Central and South America, including Argentina where road conditions and customer preferences are seen as similar to India. Honda is talking about cost competitiveness, faster operations, more local procurement and modularisation, all of which strengthen India’s role inside the wider Honda system.

There is a stronger push on the electric two-wheeler angle as well. India will move ahead as planned with electric motorcycle models that meet local customer needs, while also proceeding with the construction of a factory dedicated to electric models. But Honda will first closely monitor market changes and customer demand taking a flexible and agile approach to product launches and production operations. The E2W market in India may be growing, but is still sensitive to subsidy changes and pricing pressure.
