At present, there are 3 Google-recommended routes to travel from Bangalore to Chennai and it takes an average of 7.5 hours by car to cover a distance of approximately 350 kilometres between these two cities.
However, NHAI has decided to connect these two commercial hubs with a new expressway to cut the travel time to just 2.5 hours. As such, this new high-speed corridor is expected to boost the economy significantly. Also, this new expressway is expected to develop tier-3 cities along the way.
Diving into details, this new expressway is one of the 26 new green expressways that are being constructed by NHAI and the foundation stone for this expressway has already been laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi back in May 2022.
This new Bangalore-Chennai expressway is estimated to cost the government Rs 16,700 crore and will connect cities such as Ranipet in Tamilnadu, Palamaner and Chitoor in Andhra Pradesh, and Hoskote, Malur, Bangarapet and Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) in Karnataka.
In addition to that, this new expressway is estimated to be 262 kilometres long out of which 106 kilometre is in Karnataka, 71 kilometre is in Andhra Pradesh, and 85 kilometre is in Tamilnadu.
According to NHAI, the project is split into three phases, but the work is progressing slowly according to the current plan. This means the expressway is more likely to open just before the end of the next year.
That being said, the Bangalore-Chennai expressway is designed for speeds up to 120km/h, and slow-moving vehicles such as autorickshaws and motorcycles will not be allowed to enter the high-speed corridor.
With the new expressway, the government is not only expecting to reduce the travel time between the two major cities but also expects a major boost to the country’s economy. Furthermore, we expect, economies in the tier-3 cities along the way to benefit very much.
