BMW M 1000 RS Likely to Debut in 2027

  • Upcoming M 1000 RS documents leaked
  • More touring-focused than BMW’s litre-class sportbike
  • Could be powered by the same engine as the M 1000 RR

BMW Motorrad is preparing to expand its M range with a new motorcycle called the M 1000 RS. The upcoming sport-tourer has been certified for the 2027 model year by both the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB).

The M 1000 RS has been certified alongside the M 1000 RR, suggesting that both motorcycles will use the same 999cc inline-four engine. The certification data also indicates that the RS could produce the same 205hp at 13,000rpm and 113Nm at 11,100rpm as the current M 1000 RR.

However, the M 1000 RS is expected to have a more road-focused character. BMW’s RS models are positioned between sports and touring motorcycles, offering better comfort and practicality than a full-blown superbike.

The certification documents also suggest that the M 1000 RS will be heavier than the M 1000 RR. Its equivalent inertia mass is rated at 280kg, compared to 270kg for the RR. This could be due to a stronger subframe, improved passenger accommodation and provisions for luggage.

BMW currently offers the R 1300 RS as its only RS model. Interestingly, there is no evidence of an S 1000 RS yet. The M 1000 RS is expected to be officially unveiled later this year, possibly in October or at EICMA in November. The upcoming M 1300 GS adventure bike is also in development but could arrive for the 2028 model year.
