The Bajaj Chetak, an electric scooter from Bajaj Auto in Pune, has sold more than 1,00,000 units in the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market. Since its launch in January 2020, it took 47 months to achieve this milestone by the end of November 2023, according to industry data from SIAM wholesales.
It should be noted that 60% of these 1,04,200 units were sold in the first eight months of the fiscal year 2024, showing a growing interest in Bajaj’s emission-free two-wheeler. The sales from April to November 2023, which amounted to 62,991 units, saw a significant increase of 172 percent compared to the same period in 2022 (23,160 units). Moreover, it exceeded the total sales of the entire fiscal year 2023 (31,435 units) by 31,556 units.
In terms of wholesales this fiscal year, Bajaj Auto is very close to Ather Energy, the third-largest electric scooter maker, trailing behind Ola Electric and TVS Motor Co. In October 2023, Bajaj achieved its best-ever monthly sales with 12,137 units.
On the retail side, as per Vahan data, Bajaj Auto sold more Chetak scooters than Ather Energy e-scooters in the past two months. In November, Bajaj claimed the third spot with record-breaking monthly sales of 11,668 units, marking a 29% increase from October 2023 (9,052 units). The scooter’s market share also jumped from 4% in January 2023 to 13% in November.
Bajaj is now looking to increase production and expand its exclusive Chetak showrooms. The Chetak network, currently present in 141 cities across India, aims to expand to 250 cities by March 2024.
