Lucknow: In a month-long crackdown aimed at restoring order on city’s congested roads, Lucknow Police seized 224 e-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws operating without valid permits.
The drive, conducted between April 1 and 30, was part of a broader campaign to tackle the menace of unauthorized public transport.
According to official data, a total of 11,372 vehicles were inspected across Lucknow. Of these, 2,846 were issued challans for violations such as operating without proper registration, permits or for other traffic-related infractions.
Police said the campaign was launched in response to growing concerns over unregulated vehicles overwhelming the city’s traffic infrastructure. Many areas, especially high-density commercial and residential zones, reported worsening bottlenecks due to the unchecked operation of unauthorised autos and e-rickshaws.

The drive gained momentum following directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who, during a high-level law and order review meeting last month, stressed stricter ground-level enforcement and immediate verification of tempo and e-rickshaw drivers in urban areas, especially in Lucknow.
A 32-year-old woman, who arrived in Lucknow on March 18 after a job interview in Varanasi, was abducted while heading to her brother’s residence in Chinhat .
