JLR To Join Forces With Indian Company Agratas For Developing Next-Gen EV Batteries – Better Range

JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) is a world-renowned automotive manufacturer known for its fleet of luxurious and high-performance vehicles. Born from the illustrious British marques, Jaguar and Land Rover, JLR has firmly established itself as an iconic brand in the high-performance luxury segment.

Recently it was reported that the iconic carmaker, JLR, will partner with an Indian company, Agratas, to develop new battery packs. It is said that these battery packs are developed to improvise the range and can offer its EVs a range of up to 720km on a single charge.

Agratas is owned by the Indian company Tata, which is also the parent company of JLR. The luxury carmakers are looking to set up a cell manufacturing plant in the UK or Spain.

Tata has signed to set up a manufacturing plant in Gujarat this month to develop the batteries there. The plant will be able to produce batteries with an initial capacity of 20GWh.

Agratas batteries will have higher energy density than the current batteries used in the Jaguar I-Pace. With 342 litres of cell capacity, the new batteries can provide 120kWh compared to the I-Pace’s 387 litres and 84kWh.

The increased battery pack size would allow the EMA Ultra Range pack to travel up to 720km on a single charge. EMA is JLR’s latest EV architecture, which will be seen in upcoming Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender models.

Moreover, the improved battery pack will also support fast charging. The exact details of the charger are yet to be known, but it was reported that the battery pack could add a range of 320km in just 15 minutes.

Under the supervision of JLR, Agratas will design and produce the battery cells in India. Both companies are also planning to develop a recycling solution that will benefit the environment.

Tata, known for its commitment to nature, has inspired the involved companies and they intend to maintain complete transparency throughout the process of sourcing and refining materials for developing and producing the new battery pack.

The collaboration between JLR and Agratas marks a significant step forward in developing advanced electric vehicle technology. This partnership aims to revolutionize the range and performance of future JLR EVs, which will compete against their German rival, Mercedes Benz.

JLR is set to launch an electric Range Rover next year, followed by a four-door GT Jaguar, the first among the three proposed electric Jaguars. However, it needs to be clarified whether the Agratas batteries will be ready for the first electric Range Rover or the Jaguar.
