Ola’s New Gigafactory Set To Transform Cell Manufacturing Landscape in India – Global Expansion In Mind?

Ola Electric, India’s largest-selling EV company, is constructing the country’s largest Gigafactory. They have begun the construction of their latest cell factory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu. This cell factory will be the quickest to be constructed and is believed to bring a revolutionary change to the manufacturing industry.

With the construction of this mega factory, The EV makers are planning to take the electric revolution globally, from India, their current and primary market. With the expansion, several advancements in cell and battery technology can be expected from the manufacturer.

The upcoming Gigafactory is spread across 115 acres and is expected to start functioning at the beginning of 2024. The factory will initially produce 5GWh of capacity, gradually expanding in stages, reaching a maximum capacity of 100GWh.

Once operational, it will become the largest cell factory in India, and when it attains its maximum capacity and becomes fully operational, it will rank among the world’s largest cell manufacturing facilities.

Additionally, Ola Electric has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu to expand its production capacities in the realms of two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and cells in the state.

Under this agreement, Ola will establish an EV Hub consisting of advanced cell and electric vehicle manufacturing facilities, vendor and supplier parks, and a larger support ecosystem for EVs in a single location.

Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO of Ola, said, “This is a proud moment for us as we installed the first pillar of our Gigafactory today. Our Gigafactory will be a major milestone in India’s electrification journey, bringing us closer to making India a global ev-hub”.

To support India’s goal of becoming a global hub for EVs, Ola is committed to localizing the sourcing of EV value chain materials. The company has also invested in the R&D of cells and batteries and has established a cell research and development centre in Bengaluru.
