How to use the cost per km calculator

Pick your car (or enter its average yourself), then set how much you drive in a month. Fuel cost is worked out for you from your km and mileage — you only add your EMI, yearly service and yearly insurance. Everything updates live, so try driving more or less and watch what happens to the cost of every km.

What is cost per km, and why should you know yours?

Cost per km is the honest price of every kilometre you drive. Most people only count petrol or diesel, but a car also costs you an EMI, insurance, servicing, tyres, parking and tolls. Add them up and divide by the kilometres you actually drive and you get one number you can compare with a bike, an auto, a cab or the metro. It is the quickest way to decide whether to buy a car, which fuel type to pick, or whether you should simply keep using cabs.

Car running cost per km: the formula

The calculator above does this live, but here is the maths so you can check it yourself:

    • Fuel cost per month = monthly km ÷ mileage (km per litre) × fuel price
    • Fixed cost per month = EMI + (yearly service ÷ 12) + (yearly insurance ÷ 12)
    • Cost per km = (fuel cost + fixed cost) ÷ monthly km
    Example: petrol hatchbackAmount
    Driving: 1,000 km a month at 16 km/l, petrol ₹105/l₹6,563
    EMI₹15,000
    Service ₹8,000 a year ÷ 12₹667
    Insurance ₹25,000 a year ÷ 12₹2,083
    Total a month₹24,312
    Cost per kmabout ₹24.3

Notice that fuel is only about a quarter of the bill. That is why a car driven just 300 km a month can cost several times more per km than one driven 1,500 km: the EMI and insurance do not shrink when you drive less.

Petrol vs diesel vs CNG vs electric: fuel cost per km

Running cost on fuel alone, with typical assumptions. Your own numbers will differ, so change the mileage and fuel price in the calculator.

    FuelAssumptionFuel cost per km
    Petrol15 km/l at ₹105 per litre≈ ₹7.0
    Diesel20 km/l at ₹92 per litre≈ ₹4.6
    CNG25 km/kg at ₹80 per kg≈ ₹3.2
    Electric (home charging)6 km/kWh at ₹8 per unit≈ ₹1.3

CNG and electric cars are far cheaper to run, but they can cost more to buy or finance, so the cheapest car per km depends on how much you drive. Heavy daily users usually gain the most from CNG or an EV. Light users often do better with a cheaper petrol car. How to reduce your car’s cost per km

    • Drive the right amount. Fixed costs spread thinner over more km, so a rarely used car is the most expensive per km.
    • Keep tyres at the right pressure and get alignment checked. Under-inflated tyres can cut mileage noticeably.
    • Smooth driving. Hard acceleration, high speed and long idling burn fuel. Switch off the engine at long red lights.
    • Service on time and use the right grade of oil. A clean air filter and healthy spark plugs protect mileage.
    • Go easy on the AC in slow traffic and remove unnecessary weight from the boot.
    • Combine short trips and share rides for commutes you do every day.
    • Pick the right fuel for your usage: CNG or an EV if you drive a lot, petrol if you drive little.

    Frequently asked questions

What is cost per km of a car?

Cost per km is the total money you spend on your car divided by the kilometres you drive. It combines fuel, EMI, servicing and insurance (and, if you want, parking, tolls and tyres) into one number you can compare with a bike, auto, cab or metro.

How do I calculate my car’s running cost per km?

Fuel cost for the month = monthly km ÷ mileage × fuel price. Add your EMI, yearly service ÷ 12 and yearly insurance ÷ 12, then divide the total by your monthly km. Example: 1,000 km a month at 16 km/l with petrol at ₹105 is about ₹6,563 of fuel. Add ₹15,000 EMI, ₹667 service and ₹2,083 insurance and the total is about ₹24,312, or roughly ₹24.3 per km.

Petrol vs diesel vs CNG vs electric: which has the lowest cost per km?

On fuel alone, with typical assumptions, a petrol car at 15 km/l and ₹105 a litre costs about ₹7 per km, a diesel car at 20 km/l and ₹92 a litre about ₹4.6, a CNG car at 25 km/kg and ₹80 a kg about ₹3.2, and an electric car at 6 km/kWh and ₹8 a unit (home charging) about ₹1.3. EVs and CNG win on running cost, but they can have a higher purchase price or EMI, so use the calculator with your own numbers.

Why does driving less make every km costlier?

EMI, insurance and a large part of servicing are fixed no matter how much you drive. Spread over fewer kilometres, they raise the cost of each one. Fuel is the only cost that grows with distance, which is why a car driven 300 km a month can cost several times more per km than one driven 1,500 km.

What mileage should I enter in the calculator?

Use the real-world average you actually get, not the company-claimed figure. City driving is usually 20–30% lower than the claimed mileage. For CNG cars enter km per kg and for electric cars km per kWh.

Is owning a car cheaper than using a cab or an auto?

For regular daily use, especially with family, a car often works out cheaper per trip. For occasional or short trips a cab or auto can cost less overall because you pay no EMI, insurance or service. The comparison chart on this page uses your own numbers to show where the break-even is.

How can I reduce my car’s cost per km?

Keep tyres at the right pressure, drive smoothly, avoid long idling and heavy AC use in traffic, service on time, remove unnecessary weight, combine short trips and consider CNG or an EV if you drive a lot. Driving more each month also spreads fixed costs over more kilometres.

Does the calculator include depreciation, parking and tolls?

It covers fuel, EMI, service and insurance. Depreciation, parking, tolls, tyres and fines are not included by default, so add yearly tyre, parking or toll costs into the service and maintenance field to get a fuller picture.
