Speed Radars Installed In Chennai City To Tackle Speeding Violations – Issues Instant Challans

Chennai is one of the most vibrant cities in South India. Known for its rich history, culture, and delicious cuisine. But, like every other overcrowded city, Chennai is also doomed with ever-growing traffic, road congestion, and reckless driving.

To reduce the rising cases of accidents and ensure road safety, the Chennai city traffic police have recently implemented a new measure that will impose instant penalties on overspeeding drivers.

As per the new initiative, if you’re speeding over 40 km/h in city during daytime, you will automatically be subjected to an instant traffic challan. This new regulation will limit the speed of motorists to 40 km/h from 7 am to 10 pm and above 50 km/h during night.

To implement this throughout the city, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police will set up 30-speed radar guns to detect speed violations. Out of the 30, Ten-speed guns have already been deployed.

Shankar Jiwal, the commissioner of police, said that catching overspeeding motorists has significant challenges. He highlighted incidents where accidents occurred due to the stunts and overspeeding. According to him, enforcing motor vehicle regulations through the deployment of police officers might be ineffective in the case of such violations.

However, the newly implemented system will automatically issue challans to those who break the traffic rules. The police department has partnered with the Informatic Centre to implement this latest initiative – he added.

The speed limit will vary according to the type of vehicle. Speed guns have been installed in areas like Anna Arivayalam junction in Teynampet, Dr. Gurusamy Bridge at the airport, Pullah Avenue, Ration Shop junction in Maduravoyal, Parry’s Corner junction, Injambakkam, Spencer Plaza and Alandur.

Chennai traffic police plan to install speed guns at 20 other locations in the coming days. Six new digital speed display boards have already been installed at various spots to create awareness. These boards will indicate if a driver exceeds the speed limit but does not generate e-challans.

The efforts to enforce this rule and educate the public about road safety are commendable. This latest initiative by Chennai traffic police sends a strong message to drivers that reckless driving will not be tolerated, and those who choose to violate speed limits will face immediate consequences.
