Tesla To Launch Robotaxi Service On June 22, Confirms Elon Musk

Tesla will begin offering rides to the public in its self-driving robotaxis starting June 22 in Austin, Texas, CEO Elon Musk confirmed on X (formerly Twitter). The initial rollout will feature 10–20 Model Y SUVs, operating under remote human supervision within a limited area.

The robotaxis will use Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, which Musk says has already been tested on public roads in Austin. A recent video posted by Musk showed a driverless Model Y labelled “Robotaxi” navigating a city intersection without human intervention. “We are being super paranoid about safety, so the date could shift,” Musk said, stressing that the rollout remains tentative.

The robotaxi launch is a crucial step for Tesla, especially as the company shifts focus away from building a low-cost EV platform. Musk has long tied Tesla’s future growth to autonomous vehicle technology, despite industry scepticism and ongoing regulatory and safety hurdles.

In a related update, Musk said that beginning June 28, Tesla vehicles will be able to drive themselves from the factory to the customer’s home, further demonstrating the company’s push toward full automation. While Tesla aims to expand the robotaxi service to other U.S. states, including California, strict AV regulations could delay wider adoption. Details on pricing, service areas, and public access remain unclear.

Tesla’s move comes as EV sales soften and Musk faces backlash over his political ties and recent association with Donald Trump, which may be impacting Tesla’s brand in some regions. Still, the robotaxi project represents a major test for Tesla’s self-driving tech, with the Austin pilot likely setting the stage for future autonomous mobility efforts.
