Recently, a submersible named ‘Titan’ operated by OceanGate Expeditions went missing while trying to explore the wreckage of the sunken SS Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean. While the rescue operations are underway, various parameters have made matters worse for the rescue team.
Starting with the missing vessel, the Titan is not a submarine but a submersible. This means, the sunken Titan has very limited movement and depends on the mothership for its launch and recovery.
In fact, the Titan is a very small vessel measuring just 6.7 meters long and 2.8 meters wide. Furthermore, the top speed of the Titan is just around 5.5km/h. That being said, the Titan lost contact with the mothership about 105 minutes after its descent.
According to sources, the Titan submersible carried 5 people. These individuals reportedly include Hamish Harding (British Billionaire), Stockton Rush (founder and CEO of the operating company), Paul Henry Nargelot (French diver) and Pakistani Businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman.
At present, the rescue teams are yet to locate the missing Titan submersible. However, matters are made worse by bad weather and deep gorges and valleys on the ocean floor.
However, it has been now reported that noise has been detected by one of the sonar buoys deployed by a Canadian P-3 aeroplane. According to the officials, ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) have been deployed in that area to pinpoint the location of the missing submersible.
So far, an area of approximately 20,000 sq.km has been covered, which is approximately the size of Mizoram. Furthermore, U.S. Navy has also deployed a special deep-water salvage system that is capable of hoisting more than 27 tonnes (The missing submersible weighs just more than 9 tonnes).
That being said, the biggest problem currently in front is the limited oxygen supply in the Titan submersible. This means the missing crew is likely to have oxygen for just less than a day’s time.
The Titan submersible went missing on June 18 in the North Atlantic Ocean while trying to explore the wreckage of the sunken SS Titanic. While the rescue operation is still in full swing, the submersible is yet to be located.
However, at present, the biggest problem ahead of the missing crew in the Titan submersible is the limited oxygen supply. As such, we hope the rescue team to quickly locate and rescue occupants in Titan before it is too late.
