Volkswagen Unveils ID. Buzz Robotaxi With Full Self-Driving Tech, Launch Set For 2026

Volkswagen has officially pulled the covers off the production-ready version of its ID. Buzz Robotaxi: an all-electric van designed to drive itself and carry passengers without a human behind the wheel. Set to hit the streets in 2026, the van is part of VW’s push into autonomous mobility, and it’ll operate in select cities across Europe and the U.S.

This version of the Buzz has been developed by MOIA, Volkswagen’s ride-pooling arm, and uses Mobileye’s self-driving system to handle everything from lane changes to reacting to emergency vehicles. Classified as a , it’s built to navigate on its own within defined urban areas. The ID. Buzz AD packs a serious sensor setup: 13 cameras, 9 LiDARs, and 5 radars, working together to create a 360-degree view of the world around it. According to VW, this tech allows the vehicle to spot and react to complex road scenarios in real-time.

The van itself is purpose-built for shared mobility. It’s got a longer wheelbase, a raised roof, and a stripped-down interior with just four passenger seats to maximise space and comfort. Riders can hop in and out using a smartphone-based boarding system, ditching the need for traditional interfaces. Volkswagen isn’t pitching this directly to everyday commuters just yet. Instead, it wants to sell the entire setup as a plug-and-play solution for fleet operators and city authorities looking to run autonomous services.
