X440 roadster maker, Harley-Davidson could make-in-India, for the world, says CEO Jochen Zeitz

Harley-Davidson has some very interesting plans for the Indian market and that’s also evident with its second innings in the market for which has shaken hands with , world’s biggest two-wheeler producer. The company has recently announced the launch of the new X440 roadster bike and Harley-Davidson CEO, has told in a recent interview with Economic Times that is open for manufacturing in India and could use it as a hub to sell products in the overseas market.

Make-in-India, For the World

Harley-Davidson had previously exited the Indian market and a hefty 50% customs duty imposed by India on fully built-up imported bikes is something that had made operations difficult for Harley in previous format. Also, the same has now forged its partnership with MotoCorp, allowing it to take a new path to penetrate the Indian two-wheeler market.

Zeitz has also shown interest in using Hero’s manufacturing capabilities and invest in the Indian arm of Harley-Davidson.

“And (there is) a lot of upside with much greater manufacturing capability that Hero brings in and the willingness to invest into the business, to really build us up as a brand. So, I would say it is the right decision,” he told PTI.

X440 Being Produced In Neemrana Plant

Harley-Davidson used to produce the Street 750 for the Indian, as well as international markets at its Bawal, Neemrana-based facility which has now being used for the production of X440, by Hero. The launch of X440 has allowed the company to reposition itself and brought it under the range of many prospective Indian buyers. At a starting price tag of Rs 2.29 lakh (ex-showroom), Harley has now become a rival to the likes of motorcycles such as Meteor 350 and Classic 350.
