Yamaha Electric Sportbike under Development

  • Patent drawings leaked
  • Resembles the track-only Proto BEV concept

Leaked patent drawings have revealed that Yamaha is developing an electric motorcycle that resembles the track-only Proto BEV concept unveiled at the 2025 Tokyo Mobility Show. It features a beam-type frame wrapped around a large battery pack and has proportions similar to the Yamaha YZF-R7.

The patent mainly focuses on the bike’s braking system. Like many electric motorcycles, it uses a left-hand lever for the rear brake instead of a conventional foot-operated pedal. Yamaha has also positioned the ABS hydraulic control unit just behind the steering head instead of under the seat. According to the company, this setup shortens the brake lines and improves ABS response times.

The documents also reveal an AC fast-charging system with a Type 2 charging socket, similar to the setup used on Honda’s new WN7 electric motorcycle. The bike’s charge controller is mounted above the battery pack, while the motor controller sits in the belly pan ahead of the motor. The battery case is made from die-cast aluminium and also serves as a structural component.

The inclusion of AC fast charging suggests that Yamaha’s electric sportbike could offer higher performance and quicker charging than most current electric motorcycles. If Honda’s WN7 gets widely accepted in the global two-wheeler market, Yamaha could be among the first Japanese manufacturers to introduce a strong contender.
