Tesla to expand supercharging network in India: Co official

Tesla to expand supercharger network across major Indian cities amid EV push and new model launches

American electric carmaker Tesla said on Friday it will significantly expand its charging infrastructure across major Indian cities, including superchargers and destination charging hubs, as it deepens its push in the country.

The company, which recently marked its entry into India with the launch of the Model Y, had earlier this week introduced its Model YL, a three-row, six-seater SUV priced at Rs 61.99 lakh. Alongside new vehicle launches, Tesla is ramping up its charging network to address range anxiety among customers.

Tesla India General Manager Sharad Agarwal said the company currently operates five supercharging stations in India, strategically placed around customer lifestyle hubs such as workplaces, shopping centres and travel routes.

He added that in the coming months, Tesla will expand its charging infrastructure across key cities including Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Pune, with both superchargers and destination chargers planned.

Agarwal said Tesla’s global charging ecosystem includes over 8,100 charging stations and more than 80,000 superchargers, with an uptime of 99.95%, and the company aims to replicate a similar experience in India.

Emphasising the importance of home charging for EV adoption, he said Tesla has developed the capability to install home charging systems across all cities and states in the country.

Since its India entry in July last year with the launch of its first Experience Center in Mumbai, Tesla now operates three centres in Delhi, Mumbai and Gurugram. It has also expanded its service network, with facilities in Gurugram, Mumbai, and a newly launched body shop in Pune, while further expansion is planned in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

Following a direct-to-consumer model, Tesla has delivered vehicles across 21 states in India so far.
