Bajaj Electric Motorcycle Under Development; Global Debut Expected in FY2028

Bajaj Auto has officially confirmed that it is developing its first electric motorcycle, with the launch expected around FY2028. The company revealed that development is progressing steadily and that the model will make its debut in export markets before arriving in India.

Speaking during the company’s post-earnings call, Dinesh Thapar, Chief Financial Officer, said, “Development of our electric motorcycle is well underway, with product work progressing steadily. We anticipate a launch around FY28, provided all goes to plan. Our initial focus will be on export markets, followed by the domestic market.”

The announcement marks Bajaj’s entry into the fast-growing electric motorcycle space, extending its EV portfolio beyond the Chetak electric scooter and e-rickshaws. The move comes at a time when the company is witnessing strong demand for the Chetak electric, which has prompted Bajaj to increase its production capacity from 50,000 to 60,000 units per month.

Interestingly, the FY2028 timeline also coincides with the implementation of Delhi’s new EV policy, which proposes a ban on the registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers from April 1, 2028. While the Bajaj electric motorcycle may not be directly linked to the policy, the timing suggests that the company is prepared for the rapidly evolving regulatory landscape.

Meanwhile, the export-first strategy indicates that the electric motorcycle is likely being developed as a global product rather than being targeted solely at the Indian market. Bajaj has not shared any technical details about the motorcycle, including its performance, battery specifications or the platform it will use. It also remains to be seen whether the company will introduce the model under the Pulsar brand or create an entirely new electric sub-brand.

With rivals such as TVS Motor, Hero MotoCorp and Ather Energy stepping up their EV efforts, Bajaj’s upcoming electric motorcycle is set to become a significant addition to the rapidly expanding electric two-wheeler segment.
