CFMoto-based KTM RC 450 NOT Coming to India

The KTM RC 450, which was recently launched in China, is one of the most talked-about motorcycles lately, and for good reasons. Based on the CFMoto 450SR S, it is a profoundly impressive package in terms of engine, hardware, and technology. However, as much as it is being globally applauded, the motorcycle will most likely remain China-exclusive and will not be introduced in India.

You see, what backs this theory up is the fact that KTM, under its ownership with Bajaj Auto, has been developing a new sub-500cc, twin-cylinder platform here in India. It will certainly spawn the entire range of what KTM’s existing 390 series has, including the Duke, Adventure, Enduro, and RC. Now, whether this platform replaces the existing 390 line-up remains to be seen.

What we are certain about is that KTM will bring a twin-cylinder RC based on this new platform, instead of the CFMoto-based 450cc offering. The latter does not fit the Indian scheme of things for KTM in any way – neither does KTM have a partnership with CFMoto in our country, or any other country for that matter, except China, nor can the Austrian brand afford to bring it here as a CBU/CKD product and price it steeply. In fact, it is also unlikely to enter Europe, where A2 category bikes are capped at 48bhp and the RC 450 exceeds that limit.

That said, the China-specific KTM RC 450 is a drool-worthy package. It is a lighter, more powerful, and mechanically better-equipped motorcycle than the CFMoto offering it is based on. The 449cc twin on the RC makes 56bhp, which is close to 4bhp more than its CFMoto cousin. Plus, the former is 3kg lighter at 168kg and the fully-adjustable WP suspension has more adjustability at both ends. Furthermore, there are cornering rider aids, multiple riding modes, and a TFT dash.

Now, we hope the Indian-spec, twin-cylinder RC will be as handsomely equipped as the Chinese RC 450. And knowing KTM, we are pretty sure it will be. Besides, KTM should price it competitively enough to give it an edge over its rivals like the existing Aprilia RS457, and the upcoming BMW F 450 RR and TVS RR 450.
