KTM Enduro Bikes Under Emissions Scrutiny

  • Reports allege that KTM dealerships routinely derestricted emissions-related restrictions
  • KTM claims all its motorcycles are road-legal from the factory
  • No regulatory authority has concluded any wrongdoing by KTM

KTM has come under the scanner in Europe following allegations over an emissions controversy for some of its road-homologated enduro motorcycles. European media outlets have reported that some of these bikes were being delivered in a de-restricted form that allegedly exceeds emissions and noise limits.

The investigation alleges that KTM dealerships across several European countries routinely removed factory-installed restrictions on enduro models after they had cleared homologation tests. According to the reports, these modifications increased performance but also resulted in significantly higher emissions and noise levels than those allowed under European regulations.

KTM has strongly denied the allegations. In an official statement, the Bajaj-owned bike maker said all KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas enduro motorcycles leave the factory in a fully road-legal and homologated condition. The company added that any conversion for competition use is carried out only after the purchase of its bikes and at the customer’s request, with buyers being informed that such modifications aren’t road legal.

While the controversy has reportedly prompted regulatory attention across Europe, no regulatory authority has concluded that KTM has violated any emissions or homologation-related regulations. That said, if any violations are found, further action could be taken against the parties involved. This development adds another challenge for KTM at a time when the brand is already navigating a difficult business environment in Europe.
