KOCHI: A major fire broke out in a three-story commercial building situated on the national highway in Karukutty on Friday afternoon. The fire occurred in the building Newyear Golden Tea Pvt Ltd, where units of multiple trading sectors are functioning. Although people present in the building managed to escape the fire, a 57-year-old Thriprayar native is suspected to be trapped inside.Three vehicles parked in front of the building also caught fire.
According to fire force officials in Angamaly, the fire broke out at around 3 pm on the ground floor and soon spread out to other floors.
As many as 10 fire units with around 50 fire personnel from various fire and rescue services stations have been pressed into action. Fire personnel said since the interior of the building is decorated with wood panels, it has become difficult to extinguish the fire. They could not enter the building even at 7 pm.
Karukutty panchayat president Lathika Sasikumar said the whole building was on fire. The highway also experienced severe traffic congestion due to the fire making it even difficult for fire engines to navigate and to collect water for dousing the fire.
