Intense heat at Bengaluru set the stage for testing Ducati's inaugural motocross offering. After four demanding dirt sessions at the BigRock track, muscle fatigue set in, yet the chance to tackle a fifth run on the competition-proven machine was irresistible.
The Equipment and Engineering
Ducati equips the Desmo450 MX with advanced rider aids not typically found on rival dirt bikes. Riders get switchable ride modes, engine brake control, launch control, traction control, and an upshift quickshifter, all controlled via a handlebar module. Configuring the ride modes requires the optional Ducati X-Link application and WiFi module, which also calculates suspension recommendations based on rider weight. The machine's construction focuses heavily on weight reduction.

At its heart lies a 449.6cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder motor featuring the Desmodromic valve setup. This lightweight unit tips the scales at 26.8kg, pumping out 62.6bhp and 53.5Nm of torque through a five-speed transmission. Complementing the engine is an 8.9kg frame built using just 11 elements to minimize welds and potential stress points. A cast aluminium swingarm works alongside fully adjustable Showa components, comprising 49mm closed-cartridge front forks with 310mm of travel and a progressive linkage rear monoshock offering 301mm of travel. Pirelli Scorpion MX32 knobby tires wrap around the 21-inch front and 19-inch rear spoke wheels.

Aesthetic Design
At first glance, the motorcycle displays standard dirt bike proportions with a high riding position and sleek body panels. Closer inspection reveals distinct Italian styling cues through sharp creases and extensive red paintwork matched with prominent branding. Premium detailing includes Kashima coating on the front suspension, a magnesium engine cover, and precision engineering visible across the welds and chassis layout.
On-Track Performance
Climbing aboard requires clearing a 970mm seat height, though the slender chassis profile and suspension compression allow a 5'11" rider to touch the ground with both toes. Activating the engine brings to life a deep, aggressive exhaust note. Opening the throttle unleashes aggressive power delivery, often causing front-end lift in the lower gears during straight-line acceleration.
Once accustomed to the power, the chassis displays remarkable compliance over jumps and through corners without unsettling the rider. The tires bite firmly into loose dirt as speeds increase, providing immense stability. Deactivating traction control in Rider 1 mode introduced a looser rear slide, while a second rider mode remains available for damp conditions. Minor drawbacks encountered during the test included occasional stiffness from the quickshifter and a front brake bite that required careful modulation to avoid premature lockups.
Verdict for Buyers
Retailing at Rs. 17.23 lakh, ex-showroom, the Ducati Desmo450 MX offers professional-grade motocross capability combined with advanced electronic customization for serious off-road enthusiasts.
