Skoda Auto Volkswagen India opens 33,000 sq. ft. R&D wing in Pune

Private Limited (SAVWIPL) on Thursday inaugurated a new wing of its (TCP) in Baner, spanning 33,000 sq. ft., as the unit aims to become a strategic global R&D hub within the .

Skoda’s India unit aims to achieve a sharper response momentum to Indian consumer preferences and market trends, and ensure faster adaptation and scalability.


The newly inaugurated R&D facility is dedicated to advanced vehicle development, platform engineering, software solutions, and sustainable mobility innovations. Along with the workforce at its Chakan plant, the company has now deployed 450 engineers across both domestic and international projects.

As an integral part of the Volkswagen Group’s global R&D ecosystem, the new wing enhances localisation efforts, supports export markets, and upholds the Group’s standards of quality, safety, and technology.

The Technology Center Pune, launched in 2019, is dedicated to developing vehicles tailored to the needs of customers across the subcontinent. The facility has played a pivotal role in the creation of locally developed and manufactured models such as the Volkswagen Taigun, the new Škoda Kushaq, and the Group’s first sub-4-meter SUV, the Kylaq.

“As part of its long-term roadmap, TCP is set to expand its competencies in digitalization, automation, and advanced safety technologies. This combined engineering ecosystem allows us to deliver global-quality solutions with higher speed, greater localisation, and a sharper understanding of customer requirements in India and the world,” said Piyush Arora, Managing Director & CEO, adding that it further underlines India’s position as a strategic development and competency hub for the Volkswagen Group.

Czech auto maker Skoda Auto India announced the formation of a strategic partnership with government-backed e-commerce platform Common Services Centre Grameen eStore on Wednesday to expand its footprint across non-metropolitan and semi-urban markets in the country.

Through the collaboration, the company will make available its compact SUV Kylaq, subcompact crossover SUV Kushaq, and compact sedan Slavia through the CSC’s digital-first non-metropolitan network.
