The Vatican Connection That Just Stalled Delhi’s Big Electric Bus Rollout

The launch of 330 electric buses in Delhi, part of the Delhi Electric Vehicle Interconnector (DEVI) scheme, has been postponed due to the national mourning following the passing of Pope Francis. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the delay on social media, promising a new date for the launch will be shared soon.

The event was expected to mark a significant advancement in the capital’s public transportation system, aimed at combating pollution. This fleet of nine-metre green mini-buses is tailored to navigate the city’s congested streets, making travel easier for residents in narrow areas.

Transport Minister Pankaj Singh reassured the public that the popular free travel initiative for women will continue on these new mini-buses, which are designed to carry 23 seated passengers and accommodate 13 standing passengers. The buses are set to serve short routes, no longer than 12 km, and will require less than an hour to charge.

Before the postponement, Chief Minister Gupta highlighted the environmental significance of the initiative, expressing her commitment to a greener and more sustainable future for Delhi on this year’s Earth Day. She called on citizens to join in this effort, emphasizing the collective impact their support could have.

While the launch has been delayed, officials indicated that the first batch of DEVI buses will be ready for service from depots in Ghazipur, Nangloi, and East Vinod Nagar, awaiting the new launch date. The hope is that these buses will soon become a vital part of daily commutes for Delhi residents, enhancing both convenience and the city’s efforts to address air quality issues.
