Yamaha Patents New Tech with Auto Downshift Function

  • Yamaha patents new radar-based rider aid
  • Adaptive cruise control with auto downshift function
  • The system can coordinate multiple functions simultaneously

Yamaha has filed a new patent overseas that hints at a more advanced integration of radar-based rider aids and semi-automatic transmissions for future motorcycles.

The patent describes a system that can automatically downshift while the motorcycle slows down using adaptive cruise control. The idea is to combine conventional braking with engine braking, helping the bike decelerate more smoothly and remain stable.

According to the patent documents, the system can coordinate multiple functions simultaneously, including braking, suspension behaviour, and gear shifts. Instead of relying only on the brakes, the motorcycle would first reduce throttle input, then use automatic downshifts to increase engine braking before applying additional brake pressure if required.

This technology looks like an advanced version of what’s already seen on Yamaha’s Tracer 9 GT+ Y-AMT, which is equipped with radar-assisted adaptive cruise control. One of the key advantages of the patented setup is that it mimics the way experienced riders slow down a motorcycle. Riders typically roll off the throttle, progressively apply the brakes, and downshift to maintain balance and control

Such a feature would only be possible with a semi-automatic gearbox, as the motorcycle’s electronics need to control gear shifts during braking interventions. While the technology is likely to be reserved for premium motorcycles initially, it highlights the growing adoption of advanced rider-assistance systems in the two-wheeler segment. That said, a patent filing does not necessarily mean the technology will make it to production.
