TVS XL100 Comfort vs Kinetic E-Luna: Which Moped Returns Better Value?

We are back with a petrol vs electric decision, this time orbiting around mopeds. TVS XL100 Comfort and Kinetic Green E-Luna serve a part of the Indian two-wheeler market that conventional scooters often overlook. These mopeds perform across personal travel, deliveries, small businesses, farming work, service jobs and carrying everyday goods.

TVS XL100 Comfort is priced at Rs. 60,480 ex-showroom Delhi. The 2kWh E-Luna X2 costs Rs. 69,990 creating an ex-showroom difference of Rs. 9,510. However, the gap changes once road tax, registration and insurance are considered. Our current Delhi listings place the XL100 Comfort at around Rs. 76,615 on-road and the E-Luna X2 at approximately Rs. 78,253. The difference is only about Rs. 1,638 in Delhi as an electric two-wheeler carries a lighter tax burden.

Looking at their specs, the XL100 has a 99.7cc fuel-injected single-cylinder engine making 4.3bhp and 6.5Nm. It has an easy single-speed automatic transmission, four-litre fuel tank, 16-inch spoke wheels and 89kg kerb weight. TVS’s current product page lists a payload capacity of 150kg. The E-Luna weighs 96kg and also can also carry a payload of 150kg. The 1.2kW motor is connected to a 2kWh battery giving it a claimed range of 110km and a top speed of 50kmph. A full charge does take around four hours using a 10-amp charger. It gets telescopic front suspension, twin rear shock absorbers, 16-inch spoke wheels, drum brakes with a combined braking system, a digital display, USB charging, a side-stand sensor and a detachable rear seat.

Both are closely matched on basic utility. E-Luna’s flat central section and exposed rear frame can be used for carrying boxes and bags after removing the pillion seat. XL100 offers a similar working format, along with a long seat, rear carrier, hydraulic front suspension, mobile charging and TVS’s silent i-Touchstart system.

XL100’s core strengths are in its ability be easy, inexpensive to maintain and capable of moving considerable weight through town. Its suspension also works better when the vehicle is loaded. Performance becomes strained at higher city speeds, vibrations rise as the engine works harder and braking performance is basic. E-Luna is similarly focused on short urban trips.

Running Costs

The E-Luna’s strongest argument is its low energy cost. Roughly, consider an owner travelling 30km each day for 26 days a month. This equals 780km monthly and 9,360km annually as a fair estimate for an office commuter, local trader or delivery rider working within one part of a city.

BikeWale readers report around 55kmpl from the XL100 Comfort. Considering Delhi’s current petrol price of Rs. 102.12 a litre, travelling 780km would require about 14.2 litres and cost roughly Rs. 1,448 each month. The yearly fuel bill would be close to Rs. 17,379.

Now let’s electrify it. The E-Luna’s 2kWh battery is claimed to cover 110km. After including a near 15 percent charging loss and electricity priced at Rs. 8 a unit, 780km would cost about Rs. 130. That works out to roughly 17 paise per kilometre, compared with around Rs. 1.86 per kilometre for the TVS. The monthly energy saving is approximately Rs. 1,318.

On this basis, the Rs. 9,510 ex-showroom premium can be recovered in a little over seven months. In Delhi where the calculated on-road gap is only Rs. 1,638, the difference can theoretically be recovered in less than two months. A high-use business rider covering 100km a day for 26 days could save about Rs. 4,390 every month on energy alone.

Over five years and 46,800km, the XL100’s petrol expense would be close to Rs. 86,895 at the stated price and mileage. The E-Luna would consume around Rs. 7,828 worth of electricity under the same assumptions. That creates a significant energy-cost difference of nearly Rs. 79,000 before maintenance is considered!

The E-Luna should also spend less on routine mechanical maintenance because it does not require engine oil, a spark plug, a fuel-injection system or exhaust-related work. But do not forget that the total lifetime expenditure cannot be settled through electricity savings alone. Battery ageing, charger failure, insurance, finance interest, resale value and parts availability must also be considered.

Kinetic Green provides a standard three-year warranty, while five-year cover requires a separate purchase. Check the replacement cost of the battery surely. This is the largest unknown in a long ownership calculation. If the battery remains healthy beyond five years, the E-Luna’s financial case is strong. An expensive out-of-warranty replacement would tip scales either way.

Range and Charging Reach

The XL100 at 55kmpl and a four-litre tank can theoretically deliver around 220km between refills. Even if actual efficiency falls with a heavy load, poor roads or repeated acceleration, a petrol station can restore the full range within minutes.

E-Luna’s claimed 110km is half that theoretical tank range. Payload, gradients, summer heat, battery age and frequent full-throttle riding could reduce its real distance. Once depleted, it requires around a four hour wait. This makes the E-Luna a good fit for fixed routes. A milk distributor, repair technician, local courier or shop owner who returns to the same property every evening can charge it overnight without changing the working routine. The XL100 is better for users covering unpredictable distances, travelling between towns or working where dependable electricity is not available.

The final choice therefore depends on the route rather than what claims are in the brochure. The E-Luna is the better financial tool for a buyer with predictable daily use, a private charging socket and access to Kinetic Green service. Its higher purchase price can be recovered quickly and regular users stand to save a meaningful amount over five years.

TVS XL100 remains the lower-risk choice for rural use, irregular routes, quick refuelling and buyers who depend on an established TVS service and parts network. It travels farther between stops and does not require charging discipline.
