Honda CB500 Launching Soon: What to Expect?

Honda recently unveiled the all-new CB500 in India, signalling its intent to enter a space left vacant by the discontinuation of the Royal Enfield Classic 500. While the market today is filled with 350-450cc retro motorcycles, Honda appears to be targeting riders who want a relaxed, characterful motorcycle with a large 500cc single. Here’s what we can expect from the upcoming Honda CB500.

A Modern Torquey Single

At the heart of the Honda CB500 is a 501cc, air/oil-cooled, single-cylinder engine that produces 27.76bhp and 43.3Nm of peak torque. While this engine isn’t a performance monster on paper, Honda is clearly prioritising strong low-end and mid-range performance over outright power.

Although we are yet to test this motorcycle, the large single-cylinder motor should offer effortless city riding and relaxed highway cruising. Much like the old Royal Enfield Classic 500, but with significantly better refinement, modern mechanicals, and superior reliability.

Premium Retro Styling

Unlike many modern retro motorcycles, the new CB500 stays true to the traditional roadster formula. Inspired by the legendary Honda CB750, it features a timeless design with a round LED headlamp, muscular fuel tank and minimal bodywork. Honda seems to have gone for a more authentic old-school look, especially with the period-correct silver finish for the engine.

The availability of alloy wheels, spoke tubeless wheels, and a graphics edition should also allow buyers to choose between a classic or slightly sportier appearance.

Modern Features

Despite being a retro roadster, Honda has equipped the CB500 with modern features such as all-LED lighting, Honda RoadSync Bluetooth connectivity, Honda Selectable Torque Control (traction control), dual-channel ABS, and an assist and slipper clutch. This gives it a technological edge without losing its retro appeal, something that the Classic 500 lacked.

Honda will offer it in three variants – alloy wheels, tubeless spokes, and tubeless spokes with graphics. The tubeless cross- spoke wheels will elevate the retro-classic charm of the bike, while offering the convenience of hassle-free puncture repair.

Touring Potential

The CB500 rides on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, wrapped in road-biased Maxxis tyres. Combined with its torque-rich engine and expected relaxed ergonomics, the motorcycle should be well-suited for comfortable long-distance touring as well as everyday commuting. Of course, this depends on how Honda tunes the bike’s suspension, but the emphasis seems to be on effortless cruising and ease of riding rather than sharp handling or outright performance.

Refined Performance

The Classic 500 was known for its laid-back riding experience and effortless torque delivery, but the engine was also known for its vibrations. The CB500 has the opportunity to offer a similar riding character, but with Honda’s trademark refinement, reliability and build quality. Honda is known for offering these traits on the CB350 range, and we can expect a similar experience with the CB500. For buyers waiting for a modern large-capacity, single-cylinder motorcycle, the CB500 could prove to be a compelling alternative.

Pricing will be Crucial

Honda has confirmed that the CB500 will be manufactured in India, which should help it with competitive pricing. Honda’s CB350 range starts at Rs. 1.93 lakh, while the CB500’s closest competitor, the Harley-Davidson X440, is priced from Rs 2.35 Lakh.

If Honda manages to price it between Rs. 2.50 lakh and Rs. 2.70 lakh (ex-showroom), the CB500 could appeal to buyers looking to upgrade from the 350-440cc bikes. Now, Honda isn’t known for pricing its bikes competitively, especially its bigger-capacity models. So, we have our fingers crossed.

Ultimately, its success will depend on whether Honda delivers on its strong points like refinement and reliability, and more importantly, its value pricing.
