Luxury Cars, CNG Vehicles And Goods Carriers To Cost More In Maharashtra As New Tax Kicks In

From July 1, owning a luxury car, CNG/LNG vehicle or even a goods carrier in Maharashtra will burn a bigger hole in your pocket as the state’s revised one-time tax slabs come into effect. The Maharashtra government has now increased the cap for one-time tax collection from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 30 lakh, making premium cars significantly more expensive.

For high-end petrol and diesel cars registered under an individual’s name, the tax rates remain unchanged, but the higher cap means buyers will pay more. Cars costing over Rs 20 lakh will attract a 13 per cent tax if petrol-powered and 15 per cent if diesel-powered. For example, a petrol car priced at Rs 1.54 crore could now see buyers shelling out more than Rs 20 lakh just in tax.

The revised structure also impacts CNG and LNG cars, with a uniform 1 per cent hike in tax across all price brackets. Goods carriers haven’t been spared either; instead of the old tax based on weight, these vehicles will now be taxed based on their price. This means small trucks, pickup vans and construction vehicles like cranes will attract a 7 per cent one-time tax. Earlier, a pickup truck worth Rs 10 lakh would pay around Rs 20,000 in tax; under the new system, this jumps to nearly Rs 70,000.

Imported vehicles or cars registered under company names will continue to attract a flat 20 per cent tax, whether they run on petrol or diesel. Meanwhile, electric vehicle buyers can breathe easy as the state has retained the exemption for EVs, dropping a previously proposed 6 per cent tax on electric cars above Rs 30 lakh. Transport department officials say the new structure will boost state revenue but also push buyers to make smarter, greener choices.
